Choose width for the garment detail

Start with the position of the trim and how it will be sewn. Narrow edging can provide a restrained finish around necklines, sleeve openings or lingerie edges. A wider trim can become a more visible decorative panel. Treat these as design directions, not fixed width ranges or a guarantee of suitability.

Measure the width that matters

Specify whether the requirement is total width or the usable sewing width. For a scalloped edge, identify the measurement points rather than relying on a single photograph. State the units, measurement method and acceptable tolerance. The portion hidden in a seam may reduce the visible pattern area.

Check pattern and performance together

Trims of the same width can differ in motif scale, edge shape, openness and behavior on the garment. For stretch lace, agree whether width is measured relaxed and specify the required stretch direction and test conditions. Assess suitability with the base fabric and intended attachment method.

Approve the physical sample

Confirm composition, measured width, color, pattern and any care or performance requirements against the current specification. If washing or stretch performance is important, agree the test method and acceptance criteria before approval. A photograph alone cannot confirm these properties.

Prepare a purchasing enquiry

Send the selected style or reference image, garment placement, target width and tolerance, color, estimated quantity and destination country. Ask which current styles match the requirement and confirm the applicable sample and order terms. Do not assume all products in a collection share the same width.
